Math Coaches Collaborative

Making Schools Work - NE Ohio Region is inviting your district (or building) to participate in a year-long Math Coaches Collaborative by registering a team of 2 or more K-12 administrators, math coaches, and teachers.  Math Collaborative sessions will be facilitated by Steve Miller, Math Consultant, Summit Co ESC. 

We will be welcoming new and returning participants.


Sessions 1 and 2: August 9 and August 10, 2022

Session 3: October 11, 2022

Session 4: December 13, 2022

Session 5: February 7, 2023
*Attendance for all five sessions is required.

The math coach and district/building administrator will work as a team to build local capacity to lead a mastery math approach that results in a student-centered instructional classroom. As a result of this Math Coaches Collaborative, participants will be able to: 

  • Develop and/or revise their local 4-12 numeracy plan

  • Create and implement a coaching plan to support their district's numeracy framework

  • Identify and recommend research-based instructional strategies for mathematics

  • Deliver NCTM’s Effective Mathematics Teaching Practices through district or building professional development

  • Model Effective Mathematics Teaching Practices through collaborative dialogue

  • Demonstrate numeracy lessons and provide teacher feedback

  • Work in collaboration with other math coaches

  • Facilitate a district/building numeracy task force comprised of one or two representatives from each grade level

About the Presenter:
Steve Miller is in his forty-second year in education and fifth year as the Mathematics Content Consultant for the Summit Educational Service Center. Steve spent thirty-five years in the Akron Public Schools, which included teaching at three levels as well as district-level technology and coaching positions. 

Steve is one of the authors of NCTM’s new series “Taking Action: Implementing Effective Mathematics Teaching Practices”.  He is leading ODE’s development of Mathematical Modeling and Reasoning, an Algebra 2 equivalency course.
Steve has trained and supported coaches as a facilitator for the Mathematics Coaching Program and for Content Focused Coaching as part of the University of Pittsburgh's Institute for Learning.
